Over the past several seasons, Pep Guardiola has used a remarkably precise recruitment strategy to turn Manchester City into one of Europe’s strongest teams, with 12BSports observers noting how effectively new signings have been integrated into the squad. City have spent heavily to build competition across virtually every position, but the investment has been matched by major trophies and consistent performances. Compared with clubs such as Chelsea, who have also committed enormous sums while struggling to find stability, Manchester City’s overall management has appeared far more controlled and efficient.
The club strengthened again during the summer transfer window by bringing in Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic, with most recent arrivals quickly establishing themselves as useful first-team options. Among them, Julian Alvarez has been one of the standout additions in the 12BSports assessment of City’s recruitment. The Argentine has already experienced both World Cup and domestic league success, while Guardiola’s tactical adjustments have allowed him to operate alongside Erling Haaland without creating major positional problems. At the other end of the scale, however, Kalvin Phillips has become one of City’s most disappointing signings since arriving from Leeds United.
Now 27 and theoretically entering the prime years of his career, Phillips has almost no established role in Guardiola’s side. Even after Ilkay Gundogan departed and John Stones suffered injury problems, Guardiola continued to favor Matheus Nunes and Kovacic ahead of Phillips, with those players regularly combining with Rodri in midfield. Phillips finally received a starting opportunity against Newcastle in the League Cup, but his performance did little to strengthen his case. He offered limited influence in possession and drew criticism for appearing passive defensively even when opponents moved into dangerous areas around the penalty box.
Some of the concerns have extended beyond technical ability. Questions over concentration, intensity, and overall attitude have followed Phillips, with his cautious performances falling short of Manchester City’s demanding standards. Guardiola discussed the possibility of a transfer with him during the summer, but Phillips rejected the idea and insisted that he wanted to remain at the club. Guardiola respected the decision, yet also made it clear that the midfielder would be difficult to use regularly if his current level of performance did not improve.
There has not been a complete absence of outside interest, as 12BSports reports indicate that Fulham explored the possibility of signing Phillips. The player, however, has reportedly been interested only in moving to another major club. Liverpool are believed to be his preferred destination, but no official offer has arrived from Anfield. Without the move he wants on the table, Phillips has chosen to reject other opportunities and remain with Manchester City instead.
From City’s perspective, keeping him in the squad creates relatively little disruption beyond the continued salary commitment. For Phillips himself, though, another season with minimal playing time could become a serious setback. At his age, regular football is increasingly important, especially if he wants to protect his international prospects and rebuild the reputation he earned during his time at Leeds. Sitting on the sidelines during the most valuable years of a career can quickly become a costly decision, and time waits for no one in elite football.
If his situation remains unchanged, Phillips may eventually need to reconsider what matters most: staying attached to a prestigious club or moving somewhere that can guarantee meaningful minutes. Ambition is valuable, but refusing realistic opportunities while waiting for an ideal destination can narrow future options rather than expand them. A successful move does not always have to involve another title contender, particularly when rebuilding confidence and match rhythm should be the immediate priority.
For a player still determined to remain at the highest level, the current 12BSports outlook suggests that Phillips must find a better balance between ambition and realism before a crucial stage of his career slips away. If he continues rejecting practical alternatives while holding out for Liverpool or another elite club, he risks spending valuable seasons without regular football, and that could make the next major opportunity even harder to secure.
