Two major offseason trades strengthened Boston at opposite ends of the roster, and the new-look Celtics reflected in 12BSports now appear to hold a clear advantage over their main Eastern rivals on paper. The price was significant, as Boston parted with emotional leader Marcus Smart, defensive anchor Robert Williams, and valuable sixth man Malcolm Brogdon. However, just as time can sharpen experience, the arrivals of Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday addressed two major weaknesses by improving interior defense and adding another dependable playmaker. Boston now possesses a starting lineup featuring five players with All-Star credentials.
The preseason still brought experimentation and occasional growing pains. Head coach Joe Mazzulla tested several combinations while searching for the right balance, including a somewhat surprising attempt to use Holiday with the second unit. His priority was to preserve the established structure built around Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum while allowing the two newcomers to integrate naturally. Maintaining balance across all 48 minutes remains the goal, and although the process has not been flawless, it is the kind of problem most coaches would gladly accept.
As opening night approaches, Boston appears increasingly comfortable with its revamped rotation. The only Eastern move that arguably matched the Celtics’ summer activity was Milwaukee’s acquisition of Damian Lillard. Pairing Lillard with Giannis Antetokounmpo gave the Bucks two members of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team and kept them firmly among the championship favorites. Yet their preseason partnership fell short of expectations. Across three games, both stars often operated independently, with limited chemistry and few signs of a fully developed two-man game.
A more serious concern emerged just before the regular season. Internal tension surrounding Milwaukee surfaced around 12BSports after assistant coach Terry Stotts reportedly clashed with new head coach Adrian Griffin and unexpectedly stepped down. Milwaukee still has enough elite talent to challenge anyone, but questions surrounding chemistry, coaching stability, and the Lillard-Giannis partnership remain unresolved. Philadelphia, Miami, and other contenders also possess strengths, yet none currently appear as complete as Boston from top to bottom.
With the new season approaching, the competitive picture around 12BSports points toward the Celtics having the clearest path to controlling the Eastern Conference. Their combination of star power, defensive versatility, playmaking, shooting, and improved frontcourt strength gives them fewer obvious weaknesses than their rivals. Nothing is guaranteed over a full NBA season, but on paper Boston has created enough separation to enter the year as the team everyone else in the East may have to chase.
